TAKEOVER: Louis-Dreyfus close to becoming owner at Sunderland

TAKEOVER: Louis-Dreyfus close to becoming owner at Sunderland

A bid to take over Sunderland is being ratified by the EFL.

It could mean a 13-month wait could be coming to an end for the Mackems.

Steward Donald, the current owner, wants to sell the club to billionaire Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

The potential new owner has been spotted attending games in recent weeks stoking hopes the deal is near.

At this stage, with the deal being ratified by the governing body, it looks set to be on track.

Sunderland with new owners... again

Should the EFL give Sunderland the green light, they will be under new ownership once again.

Donald will remain involved with a minority stake should the deal go through, it must be noted.

When asked about the takeover, Sunderland boss Lee Johnson was coy.

“Obviously, people will have seen Kyril at the latest game - that was well documented and I expect to get used to having him around the place," he said.

"I can’t give you any definitive timescale or chronological order of when that may happen. Everything I hear is that it’s really, really close – about as close as it can get."

Kyril Louis-Drefus

Kyril is the son of Margarita Louis-Dreyfus - a Russian born billionaire businesswoman.

His dad, Robert, passed away in 2009 after a battle with leukemia.

He has a twin brother - Maurice - who is expected to be named a director once the deal is complete.

However, that is subject to clearance by the EFL.

Their family sold French side Olympique Marseille to former Los Angeles Dodgers owners Frank McCourt in 2016 for €45million.

They have experience of running a football club previously then it seems.

The 24-year-old could be edging ever closer to taking control of the club as they continue their battle to get back to the Championship.

It could prove a timely boost for Lee Johnson's side if they gain promotion and potentially have money to spend to continue their ascent.
