SUMMER OF MUSIC: Live events given green light, but it hasn’t come without controversy

It’s going to be a summer of Great British Music!

As coronavirus restrictions continue to ease, hospitality venues will allow punters indoors from 17th May - with live music set to feature - undoubtedly - it’s also the month for a new-look Glastonbury festival for 2021, with it’s usual look blighted by the coronavirus pandemic...

Worthy Farm normally welcomes festival goers from right across the globe - all 200,000 of them - descending on the Somerset site.

This year’s event has been cancelled due to covid for its second year in a row, but organisers have unveiled a special live-streamed event. The likes of Coldplay, Haim and Jorja Smith are set to perform - but it hasn’t come without criticism.

Chief Exec of the Music Venue Trust Mark Davyd - initially criticised the decision saying,

“I think what the live industry really needs right now is some collective, collaborative, joined up thinking.  Announcing the world’s largest online event for the first weekend on which limited actual in person events are permitted really isn’t that.

‘I’m going to politely describe the decision by @glastonbury to choose that specific weekend as “disappointing”

He’s since rowed back on his comments, following confirmation Glasto had booked the date in advance of the government’s roadmap.

Oh and as things weren’t bad enough - this - our Eurovision entry 2021 is also going to be performed live on the 22nd too, as the world’s biggest singing contest returns.

Also in the world of live music in May are the Brits Awards. The virtual nominations ceremony got underway with host Nick Grimshaw and winner of this year’s Rising Star award, Griff.

Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, and Celeste are all up for three noms, plus Jessie Ware who’s in the running for album of the year and female solo artist.
