STERLING ABUSED: Discrimination still prevalent on social media

The impact of football’s social media boycott is being called in to question after Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling received more racist abuse.

Sterling, 26, received discriminatory messages on Instagram just two days after football’s four day social media blackout.

Former Manchester City youth team player Rabbi Matondo also revealed that he suffered abuse on social media just days after the boycott had ended.

Matondo shared screenshots on Twitter of private messages from two different Instagram users, adding: "Good to see the boycott changed nothing @Instagram".

Facebook’s Response

Social media companies are coming under increasing pressure to respond to these incidents by imposing strict guidelines when it comes to account creation.

A spokesperson for Facebook, which owns Instagram, said it had removed the comment and "taken action" against the account responsible.

Facebook added: "As part of our ongoing work in this space, we'll soon be rolling out new tools to help prevent people seeing abusive messages from strangers," it said.

"No single thing will fix this challenge overnight but we're committed to doing what we can to keep our community safe from abuse."

Jens Lehmann

Following the boycott, former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sacked from Hertha Berlin’s supervisory board.

The 51-year-old made a discriminatory comment about Sky Sports Germany pundit and former player Dennis Aogo over WhatsApp.

Lehmann later apologised for his actions: “In a private message from my mobile phone to Dennis Aogo, an impression was created for which I apologised in conversation with Dennis,” he wrote.

“As a former national team player he is very knowledgeable and has a great presence.”
