NETHERLANDS: Donny Van De Beek is injured and will miss the Euros
Manchester United midfielder Donny Van De Beek is injured and will miss the European Championships with the Netherlands.
A statement from KNVB on Tuesday read: ‘Donny van de Beek has to let the European championship pass by. The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury.
‘As a result, the 19-time international, who last played minutes in Orange in March during Gibraltar – Netherlands (0-7), is not available in time for the European Championship. National coach Frank de Boer does not call for a replacement for Van de Beek.’
It completes a rotten season for the midfielder who struggled in his debut Premier League season with Manchester United.
Now Van De Beek is injured, he won’t have the opportunity to play for his country at the European Championships.
Different to England
Unlike England, the Dutch have chosen not to call up anyone else and will instead enter the tournament with a 25-man squad. The logic is easy to follow as ordinarily countries are only given 23 places in a Euros squad. This time the teams were given 26 spaces to allow for any interference by coronavirus.
Their other options in midfield include Georginio Wijnaldum who is on the verge of completing his exit from Liverpool after five successful years, Barcelona’s Frankie De Jong, Atalanta’s Marten De Roon and Ajax’s Davy Klaassen who was once an Everton player.
It’s another blow for the Oranje though after talismanic centre-back Virgil Van Dijk ruled himself out of the competition as he still recovers from the injury that curtailed his Liverpool season back in October.
