VAN DIJK: EURO 2020 omission and the impact on Netherlands
Virgil van Dijk didn't return to fitness in time for EURO 2020 with the Netherlands after suffering an injury for Liverpool earlier this season.
In a Merseyside Derby, the colossal Dutch centre-back was forced off following a rash challenge from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
He went on to miss the rest of the campaign with Liverpool's form dipping during his absence. He wasn't the only Reds centre back to suffer a long term injury either, as England's Joe Gomez was also ruled out for the season.
Rumours suggested van Dijk may make himself available for the Netherlands for EURO 2020 but he refuted that by ruling out joining Frank de Boer's squad.
His absence will be a big miss for the Dutch, more so in the knockout rounds, which they should advance to.
Their group contains North Macedonia, Austria and Ukraine, leaving de Boer's team clear favourites.
Having missed out on EURO 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, it's a chance for Holland to make amends.
Although they'll have to do it without van Dijk, both Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Light are top-quality centre-backs who can do more than just fill the void.
In the clip above, the EURO exposition podcast discussed Virgil van Dijk's absence and how it impacts their chances at EURO 2020.
