NEWS ROUNDUP: Shielding unlikely to return & Welsh swimmers help Team GB to gold

Shielding in Wales is unlikely to return and Team GB scoop the gold in the swimming relay with the help of two Welsh athletes.

Wales' Chief Medical Officer says that shielding measures are no longer 'necessary' and it is 'unlikely' they will return in the future. Dr Frank Atherton said despite covid cases rising in Wales, the risk of becoming seriously unwell is now lower. Those who have been shielding should expect to receive a letter with all the details.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister Russell George MS, said:

“The Chief Medical Officer’s confidence is encouraging news that shows the vaccine is working and weakening the link between infections and hospitalisations.

“We should remember that shielding can have numerous detrimental effects on those subject to it. It is an extreme safety measure that shouldn’t be deployed unless absolutely necessary.

“This latest statement from the CMO puts us one more step forward on the path to freedom.”

Midnight kayakers on Llyn Tegid
Emergency services have renewed their pleas for people to take care in and around water, after two people had to be rescued from Llyn Tegid. North Wales Police were contacted at 2:30am on Sunday after concerns were raised about two people kayaking on the lake. The police said "The pair are extremely lucky this didn’t turn into tragedy."
Another gold for Team GB

Two Welsh swimmers helped team GB to take the gold in the freestyle relay at the Tokyo Olympics. Matt Richards, who represented Wales in previous competitions due to his dad being Welsh, and Rhondda born Calum Jarvis assisted the team to the podium, who finished within 0.03 seconds of the world record.
