NATIONAL NEWS ROUNDUP: UK force lands in Afghanistan to evacuate Brits AND no isolation for double jabbed

Let's take a look at your national news roundup latest now.

Hundreds of British nationals are attempting to flee Afghanistan as the country braces for a return to Taliban rule. The country was liberated from the military organisation's command twenty years ago by US and British forces - now, senior Taliban leaders have said they will accept nothing less than 'absolute power'.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has admitted “some people won’t get back” from Afghanistan as a desperate struggle to get UK nationals and local allies out of the country continued. Mr Wallace, who previously served in the Scots Guards, appeared to choke up while appearing on the LBC radio station on Monday morning as he spoke about the evacuation effort from the country, which has fallen to the Taliban following the withdrawal of Western troops.

Following the Plymouth shooting which saw twenty-two year old Jake Davidson murder five people, new rules regarding social media vetting will come in force. Police will be required to check online profiles of those applying for firearms licences in new rules that come in affect this autumn.

Those who've received both doses of the COVID jab in England and Northern Ireland no longer have to self isolate when they come into contact with a positive case. It's advised to take a PCR test rather than complete the ten days isolation - but it's not compulsory. The new rules also apply to those under the age of eighteen. The relaxing of the rules follows similar changes in Scotland and Wales which also see the end of isolation for the double vaccinated.
