RECOMMENDED: Plans for new nursery at Chirk primary school

Plans to create a new nursery building at a primary school on the edge of Wrexham county borough have been recommended for approval.

An application was put forward in April to provide a purpose-built classroom for pre-school children at Ysgol y Waun in Chirk.

The modular building will accommodate two nursery classes – one for Welsh speakers and one for English speakers.

The proposals for the school on Lloyd’s Lane would also result in the creation of a new outdoor play area.

Town councillors have raised concerns over the appearance of the building and the impact on parking ahead of a meeting to decide on the plans next week.

However, Wrexham Council’s chief planning officer has advised that permission should be granted.

In a report to county councillors, Lawrence Isted said: “The structure is a modern, single-storey unit, and will be appropriate in the context of adjoining buildings.

“The site is partly screened by trees to be retained.

“No issues are raised by the highway authority as parking for parents/carers is not allowed within school sites, and the use will operate in conjunction with existing uses on the site.

“A tree plan has been supplied and no objections are raised subject to
conditions to protect existing trees during the development.

“The proposal would be a useful addition to education provision for the area and complies with adopted policies and guidance.”

The application will be considered by members of the council’s planning committee when they meet on Monday (October 4, 2021).
