COMMUNITY HUB: Future of Colwyn Bay Library to be decided

COMMUNITY HUB: Future of Colwyn Bay Library to be decided

Colwyn Bay Library will remain at the Woodland Road West building with a community hub, if agreed by cabinet on Tuesday.

Conwy’s economy and place scrutiny committee met this week to discuss a review of library services across the county.

One of the original proposals included moving the library to the council’s multi-million-pound Coed Pella building to cut maintenance costs.

But a public consultation between May 24 and July 18 saw Conwy County Council flooded with appeals from people pleading with the council not to close or move the service, and 1,766 people signed the i-petition ‘Conwy Council Please Do Not Close or Move Colwyn Bay Library’.

On a questionnaire survey, Conwy received 756 responses to the question of whether Colwyn Bay Library should be moved, and 74.9% of people objected to the plans.

Consequently it is proposed the old library will now remain and include a community hub.

Cllr Mark Baker is the cabinet member for arts, heritage and culture and said he was glad Conwy had changed its plans following the consultation.

“I’m just so pleased that we were able to save Colwyn Bay Library in its current position,” he said.

“It’s something I’ve been very passionate about over the years, having gone there as a child and spent many an hour in there. We really encouraged the public to engage with this strategy with the consultation, and they’ve done so and listened, and I love to see democracy working like this.”

Cllr Chris Hughes commented: “I strongly believe the library offers a huge opportunity to do more.”

Conwy’s proposals also included a review of library services at both Abergele and Llandudno in a bid to ‘mitigate essential maintenance’ totalling at over £300,000.

The consultation also asked for views on a new Community Hub in Abergele. The council’s Abergele Town Centre study vision and master plan proposed to undertake a feasibility study of the youth and community centre, library, former health centre and car park site.

Conwy’s economy and place scrutiny committee agreed to support the library and information strategy, but a final decision will be made by cabinet on Tuesday.
