GRASSROOTS: Robbie Savage pledges 1000 free places for kids

Robbie Savage has recently became part owner of Macclesfield FC, joining  friend Robert Smethurst in ownership. As part of the rebuild project of the club, Robbie not only wants success on the pitch, but wants to rebuild the community around the club.

During the pandemic, grassroots sports across England took a hammering, much like the finances of parents across the country.

A survey conducted by Vivo, new partners of Robbie’s foundation The Savage Foundation, has found that 1 in 4 parents have had to withdraw their children from grassroots sports due to the economic impact of the pandemic.

Vivo state in their research:

With over half of parents stating health (55%), building self-confidence (50%) making new friends (50%) as the primary reasons for enrolling their kids in grassroots sport, and one in five saying they’ve seen a negative impact on mental health (20%) and self-confidence (21%) as a result of withdrawing them.”

“Besides the cost of taking kids to grassroots sporting activities (45%), other barriers to accessing sports are facilities (32%), perception that kids need to be ‘talented’ to take part (26%) and transportation (24%).”

Grassroots sports can be such a benefit to a child as they grow up, not only to help with their fitness and wellbeing, but can also help to develop life skills, for example, social engagement.

To battle the crisis that the pandemic has caused grassroots sports, Robbie Savage has a plan.

Robbie’s foundation the Savage Foundation is offering 1000 free places for children to get involved with grassroots sports.

These places will be available at the foundation’s current base at Macclesfield FC, but Savage is hoping to branch out in the future, with the help of Vivo.

The places up for offer are for children of any ability and any background, with the foundation stating it “prides itself on offering sessions for those least likely to be able to attend more traditional clubs.”
