IKEA SICK PAY: Furniture giant slashes allowance for unvaccinated staff forced to self isolate

We took to the streets for public opinion on Ikea’s new sickness policy.

Ikea has reduced sick pay for unvaccinated UK employees who have been ordered to self-isolate after coming into close contact with someone who has Covid-19.

While they isolate, employees at the Swedish furniture company could be paid as little as £96.35 per week - the statutory sick pay minimum.

People who were double jabbed in England were no longer legally required to self-isolate if they were identified as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case as of last August, in an effort to combat the impact of the 'pingdemic' on businesses. However, unvaccinated workers contacted by NHS Test and Trace are still required to isolate.

Ikea, which employs over 10,000 people in the UK and has 21 large stores, said 'mitigating factors' would be considered.

‘We appreciate that this is an emotive topic and all circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis, therefore anyone in doubt or concerned about their situation is encouraged to speak to their manager,’ said a spokesperson.

Ikea later clarified that the ban only applies to unvaccinated employees who have a lot of time off.

The store is one of a number of corporations, like Santander and Asda, that have urged staff to get vaccinated against the coronavirus by providing paid time off.

Wessex Water

Staff at Wessex Water who have not had at least one Covid vaccination or who have not scheduled a Covid vaccination will only receive SSP if they are obliged to self-isolate as a close contact of a Covid case starting tomorrow.

Employees who have not had at least one COVID-19 vaccination - without a valid medical reason - or who do not have a confirmed appointment for a jab will only receive statutory sick pay if they are required to self-isolate due to contact with someone who has tested positive, according to the company.

Wessex Water employs over 2,500 employees and serves 2.8 million people in the south west of England.

A spokesperson said: "The vast majority of our workforce has been vaccinated and it's important as a company providing essential services with key worker employees, the remainder get vaccinated to protect themselves."
